Having started so well with Aine’s opening goal inside a minute, how do you look back on the first half of the Treaty game in Tallaght, the way they turned it around?
Even looking at the goals, they were mad goals. We were the architects of our own downfall. We spoke about it after the game and had a video review on it. It’s not as if they cut us open, we just made wrong decisions at wrong times and at least it’s an area of improvement for us.
Joy equalised for 2-2 with a fantastic pass from Alannah Prizeman. Were you delighted with that goal but then frustrated to go into the international break still searching for that elusive first win of the season?
I suppose you can look at the positives. It’s always nice when Hannah [SRFC TV] does the interview at the end of the game and she always has some positives to look at. In all our games this year, we’ve had to come from behind so there’s a resilience there within the side. When you look at the stats and the number of chances we create after going behind, it is all positive reading. I think it’s only a matter of time before we turn some of these draws into wins.
Ella Kelly made her senior debut at just 15. Was that a great moment for her?
It was a good moment for her. We have a good bunch of players between the 17s and 19s and we’ve had a good few of them training with us recently, so she’ll be the first of many.
It was one win each and a draw with Shelbourne last season, with Shels winning the Cup semi-final and pipping Rovers to second. Not only that, but it’s a derby, so is there plenty of motivation there for the team to want to get the better of them at Tolka Park?
We’re just looking at it as another game to get a chance to try and get that first win of the season. It doesn’t matter if it’s Treaty, DLR, Shelbourne, Peamount or Galway – it’s still just another chance to get three points. It’s not one to try and make the occasion any bigger than what it is. It’s just a normal game with 11 v 11 on the same size pitch and the same amount of points up for grabs. It’s just trying to improve on what we’ve been doing so far this season.
Who are their threats to watch out for?
It has to be Noelle Murray. She has an extra bit of dash and class. She’s one that people could actually pay in to go and watch because she can be an absolute genius at times. She can unlock teams, so she’s one to definitely keep an eye on in the game.
Aside from Savannah McCarthy, is anyone unavailable for Saturday?
Everybody has trained all week in the international break. The three girls have come back injury-free. So far so good, and we’ll train tonight again and see how everybody is.
Everyone at the club must be proud of Lia O’Leary, Aoife Kelly and Joy Ralph – Lia and Joy combining for the all-important winning goal over Austria – for helping Ireland Under 19s qualify for the Euros?
It’s brilliant to be able to perform on the international stage. They’ve been really good so far for us this year and they’re three players who I wouldn’t be surprised if they make their senior international debut at some stage in their career. They have the potential to do it and it’s just a testament to all the hard work they do that they’re getting the rewards, being able to go to a European Championships.
And Joy narrowly defeated Scarlett for the Player of the Month award. How good has she been in recent weeks?
She’s been brilliant since she came in, not just the last couple of weeks or this season. She’s got better and better. When people meet her off the pitch, they think Joy is a nice girl, a lovely girl, but there’s a different side of Joy when she crosses that white line. There’s a little switch that flips. There’s a bit of anger, bite and intensity that she brings to the games. It’s an ingredient that’s going to serve her well throughout her career.
