It was a scoreless draw last Saturday in warm conditions at Dalymount. Was it a fair result or should Rovers have won it your opinion?
I think for the amount of possession that we had and the number of chances that we created in the first half, I don’t think people would have argued if we had won the game. I think they had just one or two chances, literally just before half-time. Other than that, we completely controlled the game, but what we did lack was that extra cutting edge. So, I think we probably did deserve a little bit more out of it but I can’t really argue too much with the draw because we lacked that cutting edge.
Melissa O’Kane produced an eye-catching display in midfield but ultimately the defences came out on top. Did Áine and Abbie probably have our best chances, both in the first half?
Yeah, particularly in the first 20 minutes we had some really, really good chances. I think if we scored one of them, we would have comfortably seen out the game, but we didn’t. And then the longer the game went on, the more Bohs dug in to try and get that draw, and it just becomes a little bit harder with the more bodies that they throw behind the ball. So, it made it extremely difficult for us, but that’s where it down on us to try and do the extra to break that down.
We did need a brilliant reaction save from Amanda to prevent an own goal. How good was that?
It was a very good save, particularly because she didn’t have much to do for a long period of the game. It goes to show you what a good goalkeeper she is, that she can keep her concentration levels and then be able to pull off a save like that.
Peamount United is a top-of-the-table clash and the TG4 cameras will be in Tallaght for the first time. How much are the girls looking forward to a big game Saturday?
We’re at the stage now where we want to play in big games all the time. It’s what drives us, it’s what we’re here for and it’s another one where we get the chance to go and test ourselves. Particularly in Tallaght, we’ve done pretty well this year and we’ll be looking to continue on our good home form.
Are the players and staff sensing a lot of excitement about the game from outside as well?
There seems to be more of a build-up into the game, particularly on social media and interest from journalists looking to do interviews. So yeah, you can feel that within the women’s game itself, the whole league, that it is constantly growing and it seems to be getting bigger week on week on week. And when you look at some of the games that have been live on TV, I think it’s been, even to the neutral, a fantastic spectacle.
And the fact that it’s the last game before the World Cup break, the last chance to see potentially some Rovers players before they represent Ireland in Australia and New Zealand, hopefully with all the interest around it we can take that attendance record back from Bohs?
Every time we’ve played in Tallaght the fans have really got behind us and really pushed on the team, week after week and you can see that bond constantly growing and building. It’s a bit of a special relationship that’s building there between us and a lot of the younger kids that come along and hopefully, it’s something that is even bigger this Saturday.
Kate Mooney scored a hat-trick for Peamount last week. She’s the league top goalscorer, only ahead of Áine O’Gorman. Is she one we’ll need to keep quiet on the day if we want to get a result?
Yeah, her and the rest of the other 10 players that will be on the pitch! Peamount have been very, very good this year. They really have the work rate in how they’ve gone about their games. They’ve really closed teams down, given them very little time and space on the ball, and then going forward they’ve been a big threat so it’s a good challenge. It’s going to be a difficult game and but it’s one that we’re looking forward to.
Are there any new injuries or suspensions?
No, things on the injury front are looking better with Stephanie getting really close to being in consideration for a matchday squad. Maria had her operation and is healing well and she’s on her way to a return. I think we’re getting close to finally having a full squad available for us.
