Shamrock Rovers’ 3-0 win on Saturday was their biggest victory over Cork City at Turner’s Cross, and only the second time ever the Hoops scored three goals against City at the venue (after last season). Rovers did beat City 3-0 at Flower Lodge twice in the mid 80s and recorded higher wins over Cork Celtic at Turner’s Cross in the 1960s and 1970s.

Rovers are 19 games unbeaten in all competitions since a 3-2 defeat at Oriel Park in September 2019. The club went on a run of 21 games without defeat from September 2014 to May 2015. Rovers went a full year without losing once before, from April 1924 to October 1925 for a total of 41 matches.

In the first qualifying round against Ilves Tampere, Rovers set a new League of Ireland record of 11 ties won in Europe, having already claimed the highest number of appearances (29), games (83) and wins (18). Neil Farrugia, Daniel Lafferty and Liam Scales all made their European debuts.

Stephen Bradley equalled Michael O’Neill’s record of three knockout tie wins as manager. John Giles still has the most single games won in 90-120 minutes (four). Against Milan, Bradley will overtake Liam Tuohy’s total of 12 European games in charge, behind only Michael O’Neill (16).

Rovers have gone three European home games unbeaten for the first time since a run of four from 1965 to 1967 against Zaragoza, Spora Luxembourg, Bayern Munich and Cardiff City. The Hoops are 18 home games without a loss in all competitions since a 1-0 defeat to Dundalk in June 2019. One more would be a new record at Tallaght Stadium, and the best sequence since Rovers remained unbeaten for the last 19 matches at Milltown (and the first two at Tolka Park in 1987/88).

The 26 penalties taken in the Ilves shootout were a record in European club competition. The previous record was Drogheda’s 11-10 defeat to IK Start in the 2006 UEFA Cup, when Stephen Bradley converted but Graham Gartland twice missed from the spot.

The Hoops are looking for the League of Ireland’s 50th ever win in the Europa League on Thursday (not including penalty shootouts). A League club has never scored a competitive goal against Italians. Alan Mannus and Stephen Bradley played for Rovers against Juventus in the 2010 Europa League.
